Academy for Modern Dance
CINCINNATI'S ONLY ACADEMY FOR MODERN DANCE
Mutual Dance Theatre’s new Modern Dance Academy is intended to nurture, support, and challenge young dancers who want to grow as movers.
We are working to change dance studio culture: we want to throw out elitism and abuse that traditionally runs rampant in the field of dance, we want to empower young people to find the artist in them, and we want dancers’ families to enjoy a welcoming and safe community.
For serious dancers, committed to being the best they can be. Levels are based on audition (Aug 3, 2024). The only program in Cincinnati specializing in Modern Dance.
Mutual Dance Theatre and Arts Centers’ Academy for Modern Dance for young people who are simply ready for more serious environments, more advanced expectations, and taking multiple classes that are designed to work together as a whole.
We don’t tolerate body-shaming. We don’t tolerate racism. We don’t tolerate abuse, including verbal abuse. We value individualism. We value collaboration. We work to empower, not break down.
If this sounds like a community you want to be a part of, we invite you to grow with us!!!
JOIN US AT OUR OPEN HOUSE ON JULY 20, 2024 FROM 11a-1p AT OUR HQ IN HARTWELL!

Descriptions, Genre
Ballet
We emphasize the form, structure, and classical vocabulary of the traditional western form of Ballet. Mutual Dance & Arts Centers teaches Ballet that is gender-inclusive and focused on being coordinated, strong, and graceful. Through Ballet, we also hone memorization skills, coordination, patterns, and full-body awareness.
Creative Movement
We teach your child the joy of movement: in its creativity, freedom, and power to express! A pre-cursor to Modern Dance, Creative Movement is more about innovation and individuality, and less about traditionalism and rules.
Hip Hop
Our Hip Hop classes teach rhythm, coordination, musicality and choreography without suggestive music or movements. Students are challenged to think on their feet while enjoying an energetic and fast-paced dance class. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This is an excellent class for high-energy dancers who want to take a fast and lively dance class.
Jazz
While it started out with top hats and kicks, today, Jazz also encompasses popular dance. Jazz is a fun technique that is about style, lines, kicks, jumps, turns, and shapes. When taught to children, Mutual Dance Theatre & Arts Centers teaches a combination of classic Broadway jazz and today’s movements and trends. We teach a technique that is age-appropriate and, as with all of our classes, gender-inclusive.
Kids Bop
Intro to Jazz and Hip Hop! Please see descriptions above.
Modern Dance
We know how hard it can be to find Modern Dance classes for children. It is part of our mission and passion to offer Modern Dance for all ages. In Modern, we teach your child the joy of movement: in its creativity, freedom, and power to express! Modern is Mutual Dance Theatre & Arts Center’s favorite technique, because it’s more about innovation and individuality, and less about traditional techniques and movements. Think: barefoot, creative movement, expressivity, and moving through space with different kinds of energy and flow. Dancers will also learn how to utilize the floor. This class is terrific for dancers who are interested in dancing, but not wanting to join in on a classical ballet class!
Tap
Tap is an amazing dance technique that is a ton of fun for all ages, as it engages the mind and body to a great degree. Dancers will learn rhythms, control, coordination, memorization, vocabulary, and isolations. We teach a technique that is age-appropriate and open to everyone!
Tumbling
Tumbling consists of skills that only take place on the floor. There are no apparatuses (beam, bars, etc.) like there is in gymnastics. This is a high energy class that MOVES! There will be stretches, strengthening, and all kinds of going upside down (safely, of course!).

FAQs and Other Policies
Mutual Dance Theatre and Arts Center’s Summer Dance Camp options in Cincinnati is about the creative, empowering, expressive, and active practice of dance!
Our camps are unique because, according to our research, it is the only camp in Cincinnati that offers Modern Dance. We have MANY options this summer- half day camps, full day camps, and even aftercare!
We also DE-emphasize pink and princesses so that all children feel welcome and absolutely comfortable.
We have multiple different camps for different age groups!
Please register your child for their CURRENT age. Our half day camps are for ages 3-5 and full day camps are for ages 5-10.
If parents feel that their child would do well with activities for a camp that is outside of their age range (whether with or without parental help, as preferred by parents), they are invited to sign-up children outside that target age.
FOR HALF DAY CAMP:
Our doors will not open until 8:45am. Please do not drop your child off before above time as the building will not be open. Pick up is at 12noon!
FOR FULL DAY CAMP:
Our doors will not open until 8:45am. Please do not drop your child off before above time as the building will not be open. Pick up is at 3pm! We will have extended day aftercare from 3-6pm but you will need to sign up for that!
Historically, Modern Dance developed in the early 1900s and became a recognizable form by the 1950s, when it got its name from the Modern Era. It is different from Ballet because of its use of inversions, “free-er” use of the body (less restrictions), and a strong relationship with the ground. It has strong influences from many different forms of ethnic dance, as well.
Modern Dance and Creative Movement is excellent for children because it encourages them to think outside the box, to be creative, to be expressive, to be physically aware, and to move freely.
Kids Bop is what we call a fun, energetic, and basic hip hop or jazz movements for kids!
Creative Movement is all about they joy of movement: in its creativity, freedom, and power to express! A pre-cursor to Modern Dance, Creative Movement is more about innovation and individuality, and less about traditionalism and rules. Think: moving through space with different kinds of energy and flow, and nurturing your child’s individual creativity! It is often paired with the basics of Ballet!
Please send your child in comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather. Think gym clothes (easy to move in). We do lots of crafts so consider sending them in clothes that you do not mind getting a little but messy!
All dancing will be done barefoot, but we do have some outdoor time! Sneakers or outdoor shoes are best.
Yes, we have three restrooms available in our building!
When you register for our Half Day Camp or Full Day Camp you are agreeing to the following release of liability and photo release.*
“I am a legal guardian of named child(ren) and give permission for said child(ren) to fully participate in the Mam-Luft and Company Dance (dba Mutual Dance Theatre and Arts Center) Half Day Camp and/or Full Day Camp while fully recognizing the inherent physical risks involved in movement, crafts, games, and other camp activities.
